Cromwell Heritage Precinct

Cromwell Heritage Precinct

Product Overview

The precinct is tucked away on the shores of Lake Dunstan, at the confluence of the Kawarau and Clutha arms of the lake.

The schist stone cottages and shops are tenanted by a quality focused art collective, renowned goldsmith, greenstone carver and a plant expert and maker of herbal creams and perfumes. There are also unique gift outlets, great cafes as well as a bike rental store and recruitment agency.

The historic displays tell the story of the incredible gold rush when sparsely populated Central Otago was suddenly inundated with thousands of hopeful prospectors. children love the talking "locals" who tell the yarns, life-size horses and secret alleyways, fairy doorsas well as the ducks, fishing wharf and picnic areas.

These days increasing numbers of cyclists are discovering the Precinct as they depart from here on the cycle trail from Cromwell to Clyde, along the true right bank of Lake Dunstan. For others it is a welcome end to their journey from Clyde and many take advantage of the cafes in the precinct for a rest at the end of their 42kms journey.

Product Description
The Origins of Cromwell Heritage Precinct

in 1990 Lake Dunstan was formed as a storage reservoir for the Clyde Dam. The lake flooded the main street of the original township of Cromwell which dated back to the gold rush of the 1860's.

Some of the historic buildings were saved or dismantled and rebuild on the site of the Cromwell Heritage Precinct. This precinct seeks to preserve the unique living record of the heritage of Cromwell for generations to come.
