Discover the Waimangu Volcanic Valley and Lake Rotomahana with the Full Waimangu Experience. You’ll enjoy beautiful walking & hiking trails, woven through a natural geothermal ecosystem. Complete the experience with a 45 minute boat cruise around Lake Rotomahana, the final resting place of the Pink & White Terraces.

Product Description

This half-day geothermal experience completely immerses you in the unique environment of Waimangu Volcanic Valley.

You can explore the world’s youngest geothermal valley at your own pace, with walking trails for all abilities and ambitions. Walks vary in length from 1.5km to 4.5km, covering a range of geothermal activity, hot springs, volcanic craters, nature and wildlife. Some highlights to look out for include the world’s largest hot spring, the Mt Haszard trail, and the brilliant blue Inferno Crater.

The trails ultimately lead you down to the lake, where you’ll enjoy a relaxing 45 minute cruise around the tranquil waters of Lake Rotomahana. Throughout the cruise, you’ll encounter stunning geothermal activity only accessible by boat, as well as rare native birdlife. You can also listen to the historic stories of the lake, the Pink and White Terraces and the Mount Tarawera eruption from the onboard commentary.

The Full Waimangu Experience allows you to explore every corner of the world’s youngest volcanic valley. Places on the boat cruise are limited, so booking in advance is recommended to avoid disappointment.

What To Bring

Flat walking shoes, camera, comfortable clothing, rain or sun protection as necessary, and a baby pushchair (with sturdy wheels) if needed. Take water with you.

For the Hiking trail, good walking shoes with treaded soles are necessary.

There is a selection of hot and cold food and drink available to purchase and enjoy in the Café. The café is a licensed premise. Any alcohol purchased from us must be consumed at the cafe within the licensed premises. We do not allow BYO alcohol.

You are welcome to bring your own food and drinks (except alcohol) to enjoy at one of our picnic areas in the valley. Please do not bring your food into the café area.
