Horse Trekking on Icelandic horses on which you can experience the unique gait "tölt". The treks take 1-2.5 hrs and go along a beautiful tidal lagoon and the longer ones include riding on the beach. Basic riding experience is recommended. The maximum group size is 5 riders. The weight limit for riders is 90kg. 

Product Description

1. Lagoon trek: This trek is suitable for riders with limited horse riding experience. We will catch, groom and saddle up the horses together before we ride along a beautiful tidal lagoon. Mainly walking and some short tölts to experience this unique gait of the Icelandic horse. This activity takes 2 hours in total.Children have to be at least 10 years of age to come on this trek.

2. Beach trek: This trek is suitable for riders at an intermediate and experienced riding level. We will catch, groom and saddle up the horses together before we ride along a tidal lagoon and through pine forest to beach. There are many opportunities to experience the unique gait "tölt" and experienced riders can also try a canter or gallop on the beach.          This activity takes 3 hours in total.Children have to be at least 12 years of age and be confident riders to come on this trek.

3. Beach & Forest trek: This trek is suitable for riders at an intermediate and experienced riding level. It is almost the same route as for the beach ride but we will also take a 15 minute break at the beach where we will hop off and enjoy some biscuits and a drink.        This activity takes 3.5 hrs in total. Children have to be at least 12 years of age and be confident riders to come on this trek.

 

Departure Times

The departure time for the beach rides is dependent on the tides as we need a low or outgoing tide.

All rides need to be pre booked and an individual time will be arranged. The earliest ride is at 9.30am and the latest finish is at 4.30pm.

What To Bring

Please be aware that there might be a cool wind at the beach so dress accordingly. Long pants and closed in shoes are required. For the ladies a sports bra is recommended. And don't forget your camera!

Christchurch Icelandic Horse Treks was founded by owner/operator Inga Currey in April 2012 in Brooklands, a suburb in the north of Christchurch. 

We aim at making this an enjoyable experience for experienced riders who like to ride the faster paces of the horse and want to try out the gait "tölt" which is unique to Icelandic horses.
