The Kingston Flyer is an iconic vintage steam train that departs the picturesque town of Kingston in the South Island of New Zealand. Located only 40 minutes from Queenstown, the train is powered by the mighty Ab795 steam locomotive and takes passengers on a 1.5-2 hour return journey through some of the most beautiful scenery in the region.
On the journey, you will travel from the sparkling lake on the Kingston foreshore, past alpine mountains, and into the green pastures of Southland. Travel back in time as you learn about the history of the train and the area through commentary from the onboard staff, chat to our friendly drivers, roam the vintage carriages, and get close enough to touch the steam engine.
When the train arrives at Fairlight Railway Station, all passengers disembark for a 20 minute turn around. During this time you can use the facilities, take photos, enjoy complimentary tea and coffee, purchase merchandise or watch the steam locomotive turn around on the triangle. Children are encouraged to "race the engine" by running along the fenced area. its a lot of fun!!

Travel back in time on a 1.5 - 2 hour return journey onboard the iconic Kingston Flyer Steam Train. Travel down the 14km heritage track on one of four vintage carriages pulled by the mighty Ab795 steam locomotive to the quaint little railway station located at Fairlight. All passengers will board the train at Kingston, welcomed on arrival by our friendly train staff, and depart with a full head of steam and a toot from the locomotive whistle! Along the way you will get to explore the different carriages splendid vintage decor, wave to cyclists on the rail trail, and learn about the trains rich heritage from our onboard commentary before finally arriving at Fairlight for complimentary hot tea and coffee. Fun for the whole family.
The Kingston Flyer season runs from September to early June each year. Train tours are available EVERY SUNDAY departing the Kingston Railway Station at 10.30am and 2.00pm. All weather gear (Kingston has extreme weather and can be both very hot, or cold and windy depending on the time of year). There are no food or drinks available for purchase on this trip, we recommend that you bring light snacks to enjoy on your tour.
