Kiwi North is an exceptional visitor experience combining the Whangārei Museum and Heritage Park with Northland’s only Kiwi House, all on 25 hectares of rolling farmland, forest & bush, with views that overlook the city & the Whangārei Heads. 

• Your journey begins in our Conservation and Native Species area. This is home to unique New Zealand wildlife such as kiwi, wētā, geckos and invertebrates, in natural habitats that support conservation efforts. Experience the only nocturnal kiwi house north of Auckland. Our kiwi are part of a national breeding programme focused on advocacy and supplementing the wild kiwi population. Attend a kiwi feeding at 11am or 3pm daily with our expert ZAA accredited keepers.
• Next, explore the Whangārei Museum which highlights the early history of the region, such as the whaling and Kauri industries. Wonder at the ancient bones of the now extinct Moa that lay undiscovered for over 2000 years until they were unearthed by a private landowner in a cave on a Northland property. Marvel at the hand-carved Waka Tiwai (river waka) born from the mighty totara and kauri trees.
• Finally, relax and stroll through our Heritage Park. Wander through 25 hectares of park-like grounds and native bush and spot a train on the vintage railway. Explore significant nineteenth century buildings such as Glorat, the Clarke Homestead, the octagonal Oruaiti Chapel, the original jail cells for the women of Whangārei, Riponui Pah School, and Jane Mander’s writing study. Discover unique, independently-run vintage and restoration clubs and societies who welcome visitors on the days their workshops are open.
