Mahia Beach is a relaxed, family friendly paradise set on the stunning Mahia Peninsula in northern Hawke's Bay. Mahia translates to 'murmur' or 'indistinct sound'. In its full form, Te Mahia mai Tawhiti means “the murmuring of home”.
The Māhia Peninsula is a hilly promontory projecting south into the sea, between Poverty Bay and Hawke's Bay. According to Māori legend, Māhia Peninsula is Te matau a Māui - the fish-hook of Māui.
For decades, the breathtaking scenery has made Māhia a favourite holiday spot for many families and individuals. Māhia Beach has no surf lifesaving club but the beach is generally safe and relatively shallow - making it very child-friendly.
There's also a playground for the kids, while the local shop is always ready with ice creams. The 'local' is called Sunset Point, generally open year-round for lunch and dinner, while also serving as the local takeaways and bottle store. At various points during the warmer months, you can also find food trucks serving coffee and fresh meals.
Māhia township has a permanent population of around 500 people, but this number increases significantly over summer.
There is plenty to do in the area including golf, tramping and hiking, fishing and surfing. An absolute must-do is talking the short (but relatively steep) walk to the lookout at the top of the beautiful Mokotahi Hill which overlooks this beachside haven.
