Tarawera & Lakes

Our Tarawera & Lakes Tour is a 120min tour which visits 4 of Rotorua most visually stunning lakes, including Lake Tarawera which sits at the base of Mt Tarawera. Discover the history of the people and the landscapes that shaped our region while exploring our most beautiful scenery.

First, you’ll journey through the central city before heading straight out to Lake Okareka for your first ‘Splashdown’, nestled in the heart of a vibrant community. You’ll then head through a magical, untouched scenic reserve before arriving at Lake Tikitapu (Blue Lake), Rotorua’s most recreational lake. From Lake Tikitapu it’s off to the main event, Lake Tarawera, right at the base of the mighty Mt Tarawera volcano. This volcano erupted in 1886, changing the history of Rotorua forever. You’ll learn in depth about this devastating eruption and the effects it had on our land and our people. Time permitted clients will have a short break at Tarawera to soak up the views, go for a walk and view a small cave with Maori drawings or enjoy a Tip Top ice-cream (Famous in NZ) from the Tarawera Café.

Our Tarawera & Lakes Tours expands on the history of our shorter tour option as we also delve further into the history of tourism dating back to the 1800’s. Once again, our guides are an attraction in themselves with their depth of knowledge and engagement. Our guides are focused on sharing the history of the area from an historical, cultural, economic and ecological perspective.

All our tours depart from a central city location with hotel pickups available on request.
